How a Thaxted kitchen install runs

We strip out and clear the room on day one, then first fix moves the plumbing, waste, gas and sockets to where the new plan needs them rather than where the old kitchen happened to leave them. Floor goes down before the units so appliances can come out in future without lifting a worktop. Units are levelled to a laser line, worktops templated, then second fix, splashbacks, silicone and a snagging list we work through with you.

Levels, scribes and the things you only notice later

Very few Thaxted walls are square. Base units are set to a laser datum and packed off the floor, wall cabinets hung on a continuous rail, and end panels scribed to the wall rather than filled with sealant. Doors and drawers are adjusted twice — once on fitting and once at handover, after the units have settled.

Worktops: laminate, solid oak or stone

Laminate is cut and mason-mitred on site with the joints bolted and sealed properly. Solid oak is acclimatised in the room first, oiled top, bottom and edges, and fixed with slotted brackets so it can move. Quartz and granite are templated after the units are levelled and installed by the stone team, with cut-outs radiused so the corner never cracks.

Plumbing, electrics and gas under one roof

Rewiring for an induction hob, adding sockets, moving a boiler flue, plumbing a dishwasher and running a new waste are all handled by our own people, with a Part P certificate on completion and Gas Safe engineers where gas is involved. That is what keeps a kitchen on schedule.

Supply-only or supply-and-fit in Thaxted

Plenty of Thaxted customers buy their own kitchen from Howdens, DIY Kitchens, Wren or B&Q and want a proper fitter. We are happy with that and will check the plan and the order list before you press buy. Or we supply the whole kitchen at trade rates and one company carries the responsibility.

Conservation area and listed buildings

Much of central Thaxted is protected and the joy of the town is its historic fabric. We work sympathetically: minimal intervention into original structure, breathable preparation where lime is involved, and a written method statement if the local authority wants to see one before work starts.

Uneven floors and sloping walls

Very few Thaxted rooms are square. We survey with a laser and set out from the sight line rather than the nearest wall, so tapers are hidden in corners and the finished room looks straight even where the building is not.

Village supply and access

Can you fit a kitchen I have already bought?

Yes — Howdens, DIY Kitchens, Wren, IKEA, B&Q, trade or online. Send us the plan and the order list before you buy and we will check the sizes, fillers and appliance clearances first.

Do you do the electrics and plumbing too?

Yes, in-house, with a Part P certificate for the electrical work. Gas appliances are connected by a Gas Safe engineer, and unvented cylinder work by the relevant registered engineer.

Can you take a wall out to open the kitchen up?

Regularly. We arrange a structural engineer's calculation, install the steel, handle building control notification and make good — priced as one job so nobody is passing the buck.

Do you fit quartz or granite worktops?

Yes. Units are installed and levelled first, then the worktop is templated and fitted by the stone team a few days later, which is exactly how it should be sequenced.

Is there a travel charge to Thaxted?

No. CM6 is inside our normal working radius; the job is simply booked as a continuous run of days.

Can you replace just the doors and worktops?

Yes. If the carcasses are square and sound, replacement doors, a new worktop and new handles will transform a Thaxted kitchen for a fraction of a full refit — we will tell you honestly whether yours is worth keeping.
