Landscaping in Hertfordshire

Whole-garden re-landscapes in Hertfordshire — levels, drainage, porcelain and sandstone patios, raised sleeper beds, hardwood decking, close-board fencing and turf, built by the same team that does our building work.

Whole gardens, not just a patio

Most of our Hertfordshire work is a garden that has been left alone for twenty years: a sunken concrete slab, a rotten fence, a lawn that puddles all winter. We strip it back, re-set the levels, sort the drainage, then build the patio, beds, decking and fencing as one job so the finished garden actually works as a whole.

What goes under the surface

A porcelain patio is only as good as what is beneath it. We dig out to a firm formation, lay and whacker a 100–150mm MOT type 1 sub-base, then bed slabs on a full wet mortar bed with a primer slurry — not five dabs on each corner, which is why so many local patios rock and stain within two years. Falls are set at 1:80 away from the house and below the damp course.

Drainage on Hertfordshire clay

Much of the county sits on heavy clay that holds water all winter. Where a lawn is waterlogged we install land drains into a soakaway sized for the area, or a linear channel at the patio edge tied into an existing gully. Downpipes get checked at the same time — half the sodden lawns we see are a cracked shoe discharging straight onto the grass.

Decking, sleepers and fencing

Hardwood decking on treated joists at 400mm centres, hidden fixings, ventilated below and a gravel board to keep the ends dry. Raised beds in new tanalised sleepers with a membrane between soil and timber so they last. Close-board fencing on concrete posts and gravel boards — feather-edge on arris rails, not panels, because panels blow out in the first bad February.

Turf, planting and finish

New lawns go onto rotavated, levelled and screened topsoil with a pre-turf feed, laid in stretcher bond and rolled. Beds are planted to a simple scheme you can actually maintain. We finish with the edging, the outside tap or the socket for the lights, and take every last skip of spoil away.

Raised sleeper beds, per metre£120 – £180
Full garden re-landscape£12,000 – £28,000

Landscaping across Hertfordshire and the Lea Valley

Lea Valley gardens and standing water

Gardens in Cheshunt, Broxbourne and Hoddesdon sit low with a high water table, and a patio laid without drainage simply moves the puddle. On those jobs we dig a trial hole and a percolation test before quoting so the soakaway is sized properly rather than guessed.

Sloping plots around Hertford and Ware

A lot of the older Hertford and Ware plots fall away from the house by a metre or more. Rather than one big retaining wall we usually split the fall into two sleeper-terraced levels — a dining terrace by the back door and a lawn below — which costs less than a single tall retaining structure and gives you two usable spaces.

Access, skips and parking

Terraces and closes across Hertfordshire often mean barrowing spoil 30 metres through a side gate. We plan the route and lay boards and sheeting at survey stage, arrange the skip permit where the council needs one, and keep the frontage clear and swept every evening.

Questions

What people ask before booking

How much does landscaping cost in Hertfordshire?

A 20 sq m porcelain patio laid properly is £4,200 to £6,400. A full re-landscape with patio, beds, fencing, decking and turf is typically £12,000 to £28,000 depending on the size of the garden and how much comes out of the ground first.

How long will the garden take?

A patio on its own is about a week. A full garden with drainage, terracing, decking and fencing runs three to five weeks, and we give you a week-by-week programme with the quote.

Can you fix a garden that floods?

Usually, yes. It is normally a combination of compacted clay, no falls and a downpipe discharging onto the lawn. We dig a trial hole, size a soakaway or land-drain run, and fix the cause rather than paving over it.

Do I need planning permission for a patio or decking?

Patios at ground level and decking under 300mm high are normally permitted development. Raised decking, anything over 300mm, and work to a listed building or in a conservation area can need consent — we flag it before quoting.

Porcelain or natural stone?

Porcelain does not stain, does not need sealing and stays the same colour, which is why most customers pick it. Indian sandstone is cheaper and warmer looking but wants sealing and will darken. Both are laid on the same full mortar bed here.

Do you take all the rubbish away?

Yes. Skips, spoil, old slabs, old fence panels and turf are all in the price and gone by the last day. The site is swept daily, not just at the end.
