What actually goes into a media wall

A drawing first: screen centre set from where you sit, fire height set from the sofa line, shelf positions checked against your kit. Then a carcass fixed back to structure, all cabling and the fire supply run before boarding, and the finish applied last. In most Hertford living rooms it is four to ten days depending on the material.

Slab work, book-matching and cutting

Book-matched porcelain or marble is selected as a pair, dry-laid on the floor to check the veining meets, then cut with a rail saw and mitred at the returns so no raw edge shows. Cut-outs for the fire and sockets are made before the slab goes near the wall, because you get one attempt at it.

Heat, cables and access you will thank us for later

Electric fires need their published clearances and a serviceable route back to the supply. We build in an access panel, run conduits rather than burying loose cable, and leave a photograph record of the framing so nobody has to guess in five years.

Panelling, lighting and the details

Fluted MDF, slatted acoustic panel and shadow-gap plaster all read differently under lighting, so we set the LED positions and the dimming before boarding. Skirting is returned into the wall rather than stopped against it, which is the detail that separates a built-in from a bolt-on.

Media walls around Hertford

Hertford is about forty minutes west from our workshop base, so SG13 and SG14 media walls are booked as a continuous block with the slab or panel material ordered and inspected first. Most jobs are a single week, and we sheet and clean the room daily because this one happens in the middle of your house.

Prices

What media walls and feature walls normally costs

Plastered and painted media wall with recess£1,800 – £2,600
Fluted or slatted panelled media wall£2,400 – £3,400
Porcelain slab media wall with electric fire£3,200 – £4,600
Book-matched marble feature wall£4,400 – £6,500
Alcove joinery either side£900 – £1,800
Electric fire supply and installation£450 – £1,600

Prices are labour, framing, boarding, cabling and finishing. The fire, the screen and the slab are quoted as separate items so you can pick the specification. Slab work is priced once we know the material, because a book-matched pair has to be selected, cut and dry-laid before it goes on the wall.

Period rooms and chimney breasts

Hertford living rooms often have an original chimney breast with alcoves either side, which is the ideal media wall in waiting. We frame off the breast, build joinery into the alcoves, and cap and ventilate a redundant flue rather than sealing a damp problem inside the wall.

Lath and plaster, and what you can fix to it

Older SG13 and SG14 houses have lath-and-plaster walls that will not carry a large screen. The carcass gets fixed back to studs or masonry with a plated mounting point, and the load never goes anywhere near the plaster face.

Fluted panelling and quieter finishes

Not every Hertford customer wants a slab of marble. Fluted MDF, shadow-gap plaster and painted joinery suit a period room better, cost less and are what we most often end up recommending here.

Questions

What people ask before booking

What does a media wall cost in Hertford?

A plastered wall with a recess is £1,800 to £2,600, panelled £2,400 to £3,400, porcelain slab with an electric fire £3,200 to £4,600, and book-matched marble £4,400 to £6,500. The fire and screen are quoted separately.

How long does it take?

Four to ten days. Plaster finishes need drying time before painting, and slab finishes need the material on site and dry-laid before fixing, which is what stretches the longer jobs.

Can you fit the electric fire and the TV?

Yes. We install the fire to the manufacturer's clearances, plate a fixing point rated for your screen, and connect and test everything with your own equipment before we leave.

Will it work on a stud wall?

Yes. The carcass is fixed back to the structure and the screen load is carried by a plated fixing, not by plasterboard. On a chimney breast we check the flue and the breast condition first.

Do I lose much room depth?

Typically 150mm to 250mm depending on the fire and whether cables run behind. We draw it to scale so you can see the finished projection before agreeing anything.

Can you match a marble I have seen?

Usually — or find a porcelain slab that reads the same at a fraction of the cost. We show you the actual slabs before cutting, because veining varies between batches.

Is the cabling hidden?

Completely. Sockets, HDMI and network runs go in conduit before boarding, with an access point behind the screen so you can change kit later without opening the wall.

How soon could you start in SG13 and SG14?

Media walls are booking about 3-4 weeks ahead. Send a photograph of the wall with rough dimensions and your fire and screen sizes for a written price.
