Tiler in Hatfield

Tiling is the finish everybody looks at and the trade most often rushed. In Hatfield we quote by the room, not by the hour: substrate checked and prepared, walls levelled, floors decoupled, then set out from the eye line so cuts land where nobody sees them. Most Hatfield bathrooms and kitchens tile out in two to six days and the same tiler is there start to finish.

How we set out a Hatfield tiling job

Setting out happens before a single tile is fixed. We dry-lay the first run, find the centre line of the room and the sight line from the door, and move the datum so you are not left with a 12mm slither next to the shower screen. Full tiles land where the eye goes, cuts go into corners and under units. It takes an hour and it is the difference between a tiled room and a professionally tiled room.

Substrate first, tiles second

Nothing gets tiled onto a surface we have not checked. Timber floors in Hatfield are overboarded and screwed at 300mm centres, or matted with a decoupling membrane so seasonal movement never reaches the grout. Shower walls get cement board or two coats of tanking slurry with taped internal corners. Plaster that is dusty is sealed. Walls more than 4mm out are levelled before tiling rather than packed out with adhesive.

Large-format and book-matched marble effect

We tile a lot of 600x1200 and 800x1600 porcelain. Those need a levelling-clip system, back-buttering, solid bed coverage and the right notch, otherwise you get lipping and hollow spots that crack the day someone drops a bottle. Book-matched marble-effect panels are dry-laid and photographed first so the veining runs the way you expect across the wall.

Grout, silicone and the details

Colour-matched flexible grout, movement joints where the tiling meets a different material, and silicone rather than grout in every internal corner. Edges are finished with a metal trim or a mitred cut, not a plastic strip stuck on at the end. Everything is sponged, buffed and sealed if the material needs it.

Booked as a continuous run in Hatfield

Hatfield is inside our normal working radius from Bishop's Stortford, so we book Hatfield and the Hatfield and the AL9 area villages tiling as consecutive days with the materials delivered up front. No travel charge, no half days, and the same face every morning until the job is finished and cleaned.

Local detail

Wall and floor tiling across Hatfield and the AL9 area

Old Hatfield and the conservation streets

Old Hatfield's period houses on Fore Street and around have historic fabric worth protecting. We keep interventions minimal, use flexible, breathable-friendly preparation where required, and put the method in writing if the conservation officer wants to see it.

Post-war and new town housing

Much of Hatfield is well-planned post-war stock with compact rooms and original service runs. Small rooms reward good setting out and a considered layout change far more than expensive fittings, and we will say so at survey.

Brookmans Park and the larger homes

Out at Brookmans Park and Essendon the properties are bigger and the specification higher — large-format materials, underfloor heating and open-plan runs. Those floors are levelled and decoupled before anything is fixed, which is why they stay sound.

Questions

What people ask before booking

How much does a tiler charge in Hatfield?

In Hatfield we work at roughly £45 to £75 per square metre depending on the tile format, plus preparation. A standard bathroom tiled floor-to-ceiling usually lands between £1,400 and £2,600 in labour. You get one fixed figure in writing, not a day rate that grows.

Do you supply the tiles?

Either way. We buy at merchant trade rates and pass that on, or we fit tiles you have chosen and bought yourself. Always order 10% extra for cuts and future repairs.

Can you tile onto my existing tiles?

Sometimes, on walls, if they are sound, flat and well bonded and the extra thickness will not foul the door or the fixings. On floors we almost always take the old tiles up, because tiling over hides exactly the movement that later cracks the grout.

How long will the room be out of use?

A bathroom is normally two to three days for tiling plus a day for grouting and silicone. Large-format or a full wet room takes four to six. Floors need 24 hours before heavy traffic and longer under a wet room.

Do you do wet room tanking as well as tiling?

Yes, and we would rather do both — the two most common leaks we are called to fix are a tanking membrane stopped short of the tray lip and internal corners never taped. Doing tanking and tiling with one team removes that argument entirely.

Will the grout lines line up around the room?

That is what setting out is for. Floor and wall joints are aligned wherever the tile sizes allow, and cuts are pushed into corners and behind the WC rather than left facing the door.

Is there a travel charge to Hatfield?

No. Hatfield and the Hatfield and the AL9 area villages is inside our normal working area; we simply book it as one continuous run of days instead of splitting it across several weeks.

Do you lay outdoor porcelain patios?

Yes. 20mm outdoor porcelain is laid on a full mortar bed with slurry primer, a correct fall away from the house and open joints where drainage requires it, so it survives an Essex winter.
